What does jail/prison food taste like?

I am not headed to prison or anything and I have never been in jail. I am just curious, what does the food taste like there?
What kind of food do they give you?
If they give you a sandwich for instance, do they already put mayo and mustard on it or do you have a choice if you want condiments on it or not?
Is it good?
What if you are allergic to something, do you tell them so they will work around your allergies or you just take what they give you?
I hope I never end up going to jail for any reason, I am just curious.
From the sounds of it, it can be compared to Army food.
When I was in the service, a lot of the food tasted good, but it was not the best quality. Quite often a lot of the food they made was either just OK or terrible.
But we at least got to chose what we wanted and didn't have to eat the bad stuff. In prison it sounds like they don't get to chose.

From what I have been told it is worse that public school food, at least the school lunches were hot. Its like how well to you like boloana, cheese and peanut butter. Allergies, so don't eat it if you don't like it. But I understand that the milk is ok but becareful of green jello. This is from people who have been in jail and prison in California and other states. I use to work in a free clinic.

Trust Me You do not want to go to prison. I did 3 years and the hype is just that. keep your nose clean and stay working and this will not happen...Anyway, the food is not bad. Breakfast is a normal breakfast with cereal, mostly, peice of fruit, Some days there are pankakes and grits, sometimes oatmeal. Lunch is Sometimes tuna, sometimes a soup, sometimes a spaghetti...Grilled cheese..things like that..Dinner is sometiimes burgers, pizza, spaghetti, veal or chicken patties.. Holidays are alright the food is pretty normal actually..there is commisary that you go to every week and get things like chips and candy bars soups and cheese and tuna, protein shakes... from the money your people send in..In prison people have a more balanced diet than prob. most people that are eating at home. Food rating...5/10.As far as condiments there are packs .....Salt and pepper on a table that you pass to go sit and eat...Dining experience with 300 other immates 1/10. Freedom to do what the fck you want and out ....priceless...10/10.Special diets go to a diff. caf to eat. they are called a bit earlier than everybody. Diabetics and no salt or vegetarian. As far as the grade its not as good as normal name brands but go to a store and buy the cheaper stuff and you got prison food.

by law they have to go with your allergies.. they can't make you eat something that might make you sick or kill you

other then that.. you get what they give you.. if you don't like mayo on something, then YOU take it off. its not like a resturant where you can make a choice..

they shouldn't give them any food at all, except maybe rat poison. they are criminals for crying out loud. and no, they should not have any rights.

If you have special dietary needs (at least in California) a 'special' meal will be made for you.
As far as the taste I guess it is a matter of how well you eat now and how picky an eater you are.
You obviously do not get a choice in what you eat. (the special meals just do not contain what ever is not to be contained i.e. pork if Jewish or Muslim or maybe peanuts or other allergies )

Aside from that the food will be like a TV dinner.
