what does it take financially to become an author, and can i make a realistic income?

i am talking about a novel writer something interesting, but i've always heard that authors are in the large part broke, is this true?

Less than 5% of writers ever manage to make a living at it. Most write part time until they "make it" but have another career to live of of until then. Anyone who is unknown and tries to concentrate on just their writing, tends to be very, very poor until they get a regular job.
