what does it sound like when a rear end goes out in a 1997 jeep grand cherokee?

It drives and the trans was flushed and filter is new put trans slip gaurd in but can not go over 30 miles an hour if it does it starts to whine and sounds like its grinding gears. Its a auto trans is it the trans that went out or the rear end?
