What does it mean when a check engine light blinks 3 times in a row on a 1999

Subaru Impreza Sport? I have a 1999 Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon (not a turbo). I drive about 60 miles each way for my commute. Today, it was over 80 degrees on my drive home and I was going about 75 mph. About 40+ miles in to the commute, I started to feel a grinding in my gas pedal when applying the gas. (I had checked my oil right before heading out, so it wasn't that, plus it had a different feel). Within 1 minute of feeling the grinding, the check engine light flashed 3 times and then went off. I slowed down to 70 and the light didn't blink for few minutes. But, then it did it again. 3 blinks then stop, then 3 blinks more. Nearing the end of my commute I was driving 50 mph with my hazards on in the slow lane and it was still happening. My car was not overheating. Once I was able to get off onto a side street, I drove the last 7 miles at 25 mph, with the fan on (not AC), and the blinking ceased. Does anyone have any ideas what the check engine light blinking 3 times in a row means? I've had this car for 10 years and have never seen anything like it.

my vehicle does the same thing. watch for it again when you excelorate. when you read the car manual it will caution you about excelorating too fast.
spark plugs can also be a problem. when was the last time they were replaced? if you checked the oil, and the gas you put in it was good, that would be my first two guesses.
