what does he mean when he says he's not looking for anything serious?

he asked me to go on a date with him... we haven't gone yet, but he has already said, "i'm not looking for anything serious."
He's been single for 6 years and is 24! what is his deal?
He is quite shy but i get the feeling he likes me (wishful thinking perhaps)

is there only one reason he would say that to me?

could he have perhaps said it so as to not come on too strong?

or is he just not looking for a relationship with me?
