What does "discuss the implications" mean?

I kinda know what it means but can't quite decide what exactly it means.
for a question (this is a dt ast paper question). such as
"Discuss the implications of the increasing use of plastics in the production of car parts"
does it means mean discuss why it's good, or discuss how its effecting the environment or how its cheaper than using metal etc..
so what does implications mean? the effects or benefits or disadvantages?

It means all of the things that you suggested. "Implication" is a bit similar to "suggestion" in this question. It wants you to consider all the things that might happen as more plastics are used in car manufacture, good, bad, indifferent, impacting on the providers of previously used components, the environment, life of the car, replacement part efficiency consider every possibility and suggest what might happen if it were to occur, or what is happening as it does occur. You may want to give specific examples, hypothesise about what may happen and also give your own personal views on the subject.
 
The question can be reworded as follows: "More and more plastics are being used to produce car parts. What does this mean? (or: What impact will this have?)"

All of your ideas are good ones. You could also examine how the use of plastics affects cost, safety, and production techniques.
