its around the 4:00 minute mark he says, "some part of our being knows this is where we came from & we long to return". he was talking about the cosmos i think but can someone please elaborate on what he means, it sounds fascinating.

We came from space to earth and we humans wanted to explore the galaxies and search for Extra terrestrials.
Life on earth originated from Comet dust or so as hypothised by Fread hoyle, Wickre singhe.

By saying "we came from the cosmos" he means that every atom in our bodies (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, everything) was formed by nuclear fusion in the heart of a star. Heavier elements (iron, lead, etc) were formed in very massive stars. When those stars died they either shed their atmospheres (or, in the case of very massive stars, exploded) and seeded the universe with the elements necessary to build rocky life-sustaining planets. The reason we couldn't exist early on in the universe's history is because only hydrogen and helium existed then; stars formed the heavier elements and now here we are.

I think we long to return to space because we are by nature curious and exploratory. I don't think it's because our atoms are somehow "calling" to return to space, but I'm pretty sure Dr. Sagan was just using a pretty metaphor when he said that. He was a brilliant man - he's entitled to wax poetic every now and then.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

cool, huh?

that's called "writing".

you write things to reach into people and touch them, hopefully getting away again before they can call the cops.
