What does a "tune" do to your cars and were can you get one done?

I have a g8 and alot of people are getting tunes done. What exactly does it do and were can you get one done at?
 
tuning your car set it as it optimal running capabality

i got mine done at church's in wilimington

what city are you from i might know of some
