what does a promotion in title with pay hike mean?

i work in the private sector (for profit) company. technology company.
does this mean i did good. or does it just mean i was in my earlier position for the amount of time required in that position to get a promotion and so they had to give it to me?
 
Most companies don't promote if the promotion is unwarranted. Some times they will "reward" you with a title and more responsibility, but no $. If you get a title and money, you are doing a good job. Keep it up.
