what does a dodge diesel truck do if the tourque converter is out?

my dodge transmission is out, and i dont know if it is the tourque converter or the whole transmission, right now it runs good when you first crank it, but when the transmisssion fluid get warmed up it slips so bad it wont even pulle itself, i wanna know before i go and spend alot of money, the truck is 2000 dodge 3/4 ton 4x4
