What does a co-author do?

Usually, it's all the grunt work to hold the plot together and keep the time-line correct. Sometimes it's knowing the scenery. It used to be the one with the better spell-checker and grammer-checker.
 
It depends. I'm currently writing a book with a friend (he's got some great ideas, but he can't write worth a sh*t.) Part of the time, he'll provide ideas and I'll put them into words, and part of the time he'll write it and I'll provide ideas and edit his writings later.
