What do you write when you mark a book?

Like say a man was just murdered by his pacifist brother. what would you write? Oh, wow didnt expect that. or something more complex? if so, what?

I'm a fan of symbols. I underline a lot, or bracket if it's a particularly long passage. I'll write questions marks or exclamation points. Sometimes I'll write a word or two like, "whoa!" or "wow!"

If I know I'm going to write a paper about something I might include a little summary of what happened that I can find easily later like, "killed by brother" (from your example).
