...civilization? Scientists in general seem to concur with one another that any extraterrestrial intelligence we encounter most likely will have evolved from a predatorial pack-hunting species, hypothesizing that such cooperative social organization is necessary for a species to be able to develop any meaningful level of tool-usage (aka technology).

Do you think this is true? Could an anti-social species possibly evolve technology since doing so would almost necessitate each individual discovering technology all over again from scratch? Can you think of any other condition a species might evolve in which would cause organized social behavior to arise for reasons other than obtaining food?
