What do you think the concept of freedom meant to a white northerner who fought

There's a misconception that the Civil War was about the slaves.

It was really about keeping the Union together.

If it was just about the Slaves Black people would still be slaves today.

The war was fought to preserve the union, not the slaves, that came later. I suspect the average white northern soldier was not particularly concerned with ending slavery. Freed slaves who were moving north were regarded as competition for the white man's job. There were riots in New York City over the issue. I don't think concept of freedom had much of anything to do with the Civil War as much as the preservation of the union.
