What do you think of this story idea?

Magnus and Crispin are best friends. Magnus immigrated to Canada from Scandinavia with his parents when he was a child. When he was 13, his mother died after suffering from a terminal illness for 2 years. After she died, Magnus's father turned to alcohol, and became abusive and emotionally unstable. Crispin is the youngest of 6 boys, and he is spoiled by his parents (but is still friendly and good natured) because he is the last of their children still living at home. When both boys are 17, they leave school and decide to take a gap year traveling around North America in a motor home that they borrow from Crispin's father with their 19 year old friend Theodora "Tedi." Shortly after they leave, Tedi dies of a drug overdose, so the boys continue their journey alone. Along the way, they meet a lot of interesting characters, including an eccentric old man called Paddy whose stories inspire Magnus and Crispin. Somewhere along the way, both boys realise they are in love with each other and their relationship is born. It is set in the early 90s.

What are your opinions on this idea? Would you read it?
The start of the book is before they leave, and the stuff about their families is pretty important to the story, especially Magnus's family. He wants to escape from his father, and Crispin decides he will support him and go along with him. Also, Tedi is a very important character; I can't leave her out.
