Chapter 1
The constant ticking of the wall clock frustrated me to point of no return, all the while Brian my psychiatrist was talking his head off, His nonchalant manner infuriated me. It was the same questions every day, How have you been? How’s school? Are you getting good grades? Are you stressed out? How’s your dating life? Do you have a boyfriend? For some strange reason my father thought it would be necessary to seek help and try to channel my inner ‘Zen’, but the true reason was that my father didn‘t really know how to touch bases with me, he was just so inept. I ignored most of Brian’s questions and focused of the beige ceiling above me.
“Alex? Did you here me?” He tapped my shoulder and I turned towards him. “Did you hear what I just said?”
“Sorry, you lost me after boyfriend.”
He groaned while running his hand through his hair. “Why do I even try?” That was the same question I asked myself.
“It’s alright Brian, you’ll get through it.” Stealing a glance at the clock, it read 1:30, I turned back to look at Brian and placed my hand on his arm. He quickly looked up. “Since you obviously don’t want me to be here right now, perchance I could, leave a bit early?” Clearly he was confused, judging by the look of his face he was surmising if I should leave or stay. It only took a second of thinking and quickly waved me off, I grinned and grabbed my bags.
“Say hi to Janine for me.” and with that I slammed the door behind me, briskly walking through the lobby trying to avoid any conversation but to no avail. Gladis the front office worker stopped me in my tracks. She was talking to me about this man who came in and asked if he could work there.
“And get this, he was only wearing his undergarments. I couldn’t possibly hire him.” She laughed emphatically waiting for me to join in with her. But there was nothing to laugh at.
“Gee, Gladis that was a stunning story but I really should go, bye.” I promptly opened the front entrance door and raced to my car, throwing my bags in the back. I revved up the car and was on my way home.
As I pulled to a stop it was eerily quiet, normally it would be buzzing with the sound of the neighbors’ dog barking. I reached in my purse and unlocked the door throwing my keys on the table beside me. Some water was running from the sink in the kitchen, I followed the sound and saw my dad talking on his Bluetooth.
“Dad.” He glanced up at me and grinned.
“Hey, Kristen I have to call you back.” Setting his Bluetooth down beside him, Kristen was his girlfriend. Very pretty, very young. She was young enough to be my sister but the cool thing about it was she was really laid back.
“So, where’s Anna?”
“She’s upstairs sleeping, came in around two in the morning.”
“Really?”
He nodded, “So, you’re home early. I wasn’t expecting you until another hour.”
“Yeah, Brian had a meltdown and I just decided to let him sort things out.” I picked up an apple from the fruit bowl and fiddled with it. It was silent, the only occasional sound was water leaking from the sink. I hurried out and barreled up the stairs.
“Anna, open the door.” Moments later I could hear her groan and the door opened. Her hair was in disarray and she still had makeup on from the night before.
“What.”
“Where were you last night?” I sat on her bed and waited for her to tell me.
“Over Shawn’s, he had a party last night. Where were you?” She sat down beside me.
“I was actually trying to get some sleep.”
“Whatever,” She walked back over to her door and opened it. “Now get out, I have more sleeping to do.” I smiled and went into my room tomorrow was another day.
The next day at school was the first time I saw him. He sat alone isolated from everyone in the farthest corner in the cafeteria. Following close behind Johnny we soon found our table. I was still in a trance, staring at the new guy he sat in a hunched position picking at his food uncertain at what it was.
Johnny waved his hand in front of my face, “Alex, Hello?” I turned towards him and grinned. “so what do you think?”
“About what?”
“About the party we’re having this weekend, you in.”
“Yeah, of course.” I turned to look back at the new guy, he was staring at me now. Before I knew it I was sitting at the same table as him. I just sat there wondering if he was going to ask me anything but judging by the way he was sitting. He didn’t know how to talk to people. So I just sat there and tried to think of something to say and the only thing that came to mind was this…
“Hi I’m Alex,” He just sat there. “Okay…um…are you new here?” Again he was just silent, this was going really well. Typically people loved to strike up a conversation with me but what was his problem. Was he deaf?
“Are….You….Deaf?”
“Of course not.” He mumbled and faced me but he quickly looked back down. Well at least he talked. He was strange and this made me even more in
