“With the recent Russian Federal Government reform, The Russian President; Vladimir Zhukovsky, has appointed a new Minister of Defence. The man in question is Lev Kamarov, an ex-KGB agent , and one of Russia’s most controversial politicians. In recent years he has been accused of war crimes, treachery, high treason, all unsuccessfully. The Russian President and he are close friends, possibly the reason why Kamarov has been released without charge so many times. At his appointment, he announced that he would change Russia’s military, making for a `stronger`, but less `aggressive force`. He said he would also restrain the KGB in inquiring into matters `not of their concern`. Many other Russian politicians have dismissed these aims, calling them `rowdy`, and `unachievable`. One politician; Fedor Dostoevsky, the former minister of defence, even went as far as to say that Kamarov was an `idiot`, and would ruin this `great country’s` military reputation, by `softening it up`. He also said that it was a `great loss` to the Russian Federal Government, by appointing Kamarov. But Kamarov seems to have changed, since the last of his trials three years ago, about his alleged high treason. President Zhukovsky has not replied to Fedor Dostoevsky’s comments, but it is expected that Zhukovsky feels very strongly about Kamarov being the Minister of Defence. The White House has not commented either, nor has Downing Street, but the Secret Intelligence Service’s Director; Sir Thomas Watson, has stated that he sees no threat whatsoever in Kamarov, even though SIS has investigated him in the past. But this comes right after the NATO announcement to create a missile task range in Latvia, `not necessarily` against Russia, `but against any threat from the east`. NATO have said that they are not surprised that Russia is nervous, but they have spoken out, saying that the task range is `vital` for the protection of Europe. This is Emma Hewitt, in Moscow, for BBC News.”
