The Road of Life
I was young. So naïve.
I was a mere girl of twelve.
I looked into my grandmother’s twinkling eyes,
Knowing that into a story she would delve.
She began rocking in her ancient chair,
Gathering her thoughts with pride.
I beamed at the thought of how lucky I was
To be by this wise woman’s side.
“You’re getting older you know,”
Was how she began.
“And before you set out into the wide world,
Before you begin to go,
There is much knowledge I must bestow to you,
Listen with an open heart, listen well;
I’ll try my best to teach you how,
But what you’ll experience, only time can tell.”
A lone tear began to fall,
It slid down her cheek.
Her utter modesty and sincerity
Made me feel meek.
“I shed a tear for how I love you so,
For my desire for you to succeed in all you do.
You are about to embark on a journey,
Which is scary but thrilling.
Give thought in what you do prior to the action,
To ensure the best kind of fulfilling.
Watch what you say,
For your words contain immense power.
Know that a light is near,
Even in your darkest hour.
Love strongly,
Let your heart lead the way.
Remember to stop and smell the roses,
Even on the most stressful day.
Be all you can be,
Never lose sight of who you are.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t
And you’ll truly go far.
Look for the bright side
In times of complete black.
Think of the destination ahead,
And never look back.”
“I give you these words
from the depths of my soul.
These lessons have kept me going
And have helped me achieve my goals.
Remember them whenever you fear,
Whenever you feel doubt.
They’ll take you by the hand and lead you,
Just follow them throughout.
Pursue them in times of joy,
And also in times of strife.
They’ll guide you in this miraculous road,
This Road of Life.”
