In my opinion the Liberty is full of trade offs. They wanted to make a vehicle that would get better MPG than the Cherokee, be more family friendly than the CJ5, and compete with the smaller SUVs form Ford, Honda, and Toyota. The end result was a vehicle that got worse MPG than the Escape, and the Honda CRV, was not as much fun to drive as either of them, and did not handle very well. Add the fact that they do not hold their value, (a Jeep common denominator), and do not have a very good reliability rating, and you have an all-around poor vehicle. Have you driven the Honda CRV? That is the standard you should use as a benchmark for that type of vehicle.
