US elections? A three sided round-robin voting system: Each ballot has room for four voters' boxes from each voter: A versus B; A vs C; B vs C; best of the rest.
The winner has beaten BOTH his opponents in head-to-heads, negative campaigning alone would no longer be enough, voters are not led to choose only among the two who did best last time, voters' views on which of the smaller parties is best would become more significant AND there is the spectacular situation that parties who lose against their two opponents are relegated out of contention for at least one election, being replaced by the winner of the 'best of the rest' section on the ballot next time (one of the 'big three' in the 1st election using this system will be replaced on the finalists ballot by another party next time).

This way, non-top two/three parties have a chance too without most voters feeling they would have wasted their vote, and voters' opinion on which other party is also good becomes more important.
I Meant: What do you think about this system for House of Commons, local council and all US elections? - Sorry. It's late in the evening, I'm going to bed. Can't wait to see what replies I get though.
