Prologue
As Sam sat in her 1973 Pontiac Trans Am outside her high school, she wondered what she would do with her life. She had an idea, but she wasn’t completely sure. She had always wanted to be a photographer but, lately she was beginning to question everything. Her grades were slipping, she had all of two friends, and she still had never had a boyfriend. Normally she wouldn’t have cared about things like this. But, today, for some reason all these things meant so much to her. But, before she could even finish her thoughts, Mr. Bradbury, knocked on her car window insisting she head to class.
She walked into homeroom and sat at the back of the classroom, as usual, and pulled out a book. She didn’t normally read, but lately she decided to try some new things. Soon after she began reading, Jake, an average pig-headed jock, threw a plastic cup towards her. It barely missed her face, hitting the bookshelf behind her. She quickly jumped up and screamed, “You inconsiderate jerk! You think that just because you’re the “star quarter back” you can push everyone around! But, you know what? You’re wrong, and I’m not going to take your crap any More!”
He quickly fired back, “Oh Samantha, I’m flattered! You really think I’m the star quarter back?”
She furiously replied, “Oh don’t flatter yourself, dickweed, you’ll be washed up in a few years. Then you’ll be left to drink beer and eat pizza in front of a flat-screen, getting fat the rest of your life! And for the last time, my name is Sam!”
At that Sam left the classroom, despite her teacher’s orders to sit down. It was odd for her to walk out of class like that. Normally she would have told the guy to jerk off, and she would have left it at that. But, for some reason today, things were different.
That afternoon when Sam got home, she went to her bedroom and began studying for her finals. She was one week away from summer, and she couldn’t wait. Next year she would be a senior, and the year after that, she would finally be in college. After a few hours of studying, she went downstairs to the kitchen and grabbed the plate of spaghetti her mother left for her on the table. Then she went back upstairs to her room. When she got to her room, she noticed a piece of paper sticking out of a box in her closet. For some strange reason, she wasn’t quite sure of, she felt compelled to see what the paper was.
After opening up the wrinkled and stained piece of paper, she began to read what it said.
10 things to do before I graduate high school:
1.Get my learner’s permit
2.Get my driver’s license
3.Get an awesome car
4.Fall in love
5.Learn a new language
6.Learn to take even better photographs
7.Experience a “once in a lifetime experience”
8.Change someone’s life for the better
9.Get a tattoo
10.An most of all: Take a road trip
After reading the letter, she remembered writing it. She wrote it the day before she began her Freshman year at high school. Then she began to analyze the things she had once wished for. She started by checking off the things she had already completed. She had received her driver’s permit and license, she had an amazing car, she learned some Spanish, and she learned lots of ways to improve her photographs. Then she marked off something, she no longer felt a need to accomplish. That was getting a tattoo. She used to really want a tattoo but, after seeing the old woman at the farmer’s market, she quickly changed her mind.
There were only a few things on her list she hadn’t accomplished, and she was determined to finish them all. It wasn’t too hard to decide what she was going to do next. Since the only thing left on her list that she had complete control over was taking a road trip, that was exactly what she going to do.
She had firmly made her decision that the day after school ended, she would leave the boring suburban town of Allen, Texas, and go somewhere exciting. She would use some of the money she made doing photography and working at the local camera shop, to pay for the trip. She wasn’t quite sure, what exactly would happen on this road trip. She definitely didn’t know how much this simple vacation would change her life forever.
thanks in advance!
