What do you mean by applied physics?

It is a course offered in IIT. Can you give me a brief idea of what it is?
 
Applied Physics is not a branch of physics but is the application of all the branches of physics to the broad realm of practical problems in engineering, science, and industry. Applied physics is the interface between science and technology, between the pure and the applied, between the laboratory and practice.
 
When I had accompanied my son for councelling to IIT Powai, I recall that there was a course titled "Engineering Physics" in which there were only 8 seats. When I enquired with the professor of electrical engineering, he replied saying that all these eight students go abroad after graduation. To get admission in that course, all-India merit rank required that time was in top 500 or 600 to the best of my memory.

In pure physics, basic priciples of physics are discussed and in applied physics these principles are used in industry. There is hardly any difference between applied physics and engineering physics.
