It depends upon the quality of your tap water to begin with. Ours is very good so far. One thing that I like about one Brita system is that you fill up water that stays in the fridge. This way the filter stays cool and it is less likely for bacteria to grow on it. When I need a lot of "bottled" water I take my in line filter from the fridge and install it in the in line system then I fill up my gallon jugs slowly. Afterwords I remove it back to the fridge. Another advantage of the Brita pitcher system is that water is not forced through the filter with pressure.
I am using the brita system to simply polish off the water quality. If you have more serious issues or special needs another filtering system may be better.
From what I have read the quality of bottled water is not regulated and the public supplied tap water is. So how much do you trust the regulations?
