What do you do with an impossible sisnter in law?

I have a sister in law that is notorious for being overly blunt and rude. It didn't take long to figure out that the family basically knows that she has some growing to do and likes to be the center of attention.

I am new to the family (hubby and I are newly weds) and his family came over to meet me prior to being married into the family. It was evident then that she didn't like not being the center of attention and shifted most questions or converesations to herself. The others did a good job of ignoring her.

Just recently she has attempted to start in with me, I'm typically a quiet person, I don't like to be the center of attention..unless I am crossed (what's right is right). I confrontd her in a professional way and she apologized but now I noticed both she and her husband are distant. Hubby and I have no kids, are both professional and love to travel and we decided to travel again and haven't gone to see her and the kids to watch them and give her a break (and we never talked or had plans to do so!). My husband's parents seemed to like how I confronted her and suggested to ignore her.

Not sure I understand her. Husband and I have been nice to her and even prior to me she was rude to my husband and he's a really laid back, patient guy. All I can think of is that she is just mad at the world, she continues to gain weight basically decided to leave college to marry her husband and now has kids (she isn't even 30 yet - not like she doesn't have time).

Prior to even knowing her, her history has been getting married, waiting 6 years to have a baby and now has a few. No education, no work, just vegitated for those yrs. Also, my husband has noticed that his brother has been less close to him since they've been together and this woman managed to make my mother in law tear up a few times by just ignoring her totoally when she visits.

Anyway, her comment to me was totally from left field.

I know every story has two sides but...

has anyone else had similar situations and how did you deal with it?
