What do you do when you do a master reset?

I've read that some of you guys do a master reset on in a while tn clean up the phones memory. What do you guys actually do though? Do you just back up the phonebook and reinstall all the apps 1 by 1? Obviously it defeats the purpose of doing the master reset if I import the back up again right? Do I have to reinstall apps that are installed on the memory card to or just the ones on the phone memory itself?

Sorry if it sounds like a noob question.
 
it erases the whole c: then reinstalls all the original pre installed stuff off the rom z:. Its like when you install a clean install of windows. Yes you need to back up your contacts. Your memory card will be ok.
 
Master reset for a mobile phone can be done instances like,
* When you have forgotten your security code
* When your mobile is loading too slow
* When your software is corrupted
* When any apps installed gives problem ,etc.
