Let's say that Stephanie Myers wrote the Twilight Saga . . . okay, she did, but now let's say there's another writer who writes a novel or novella-type book similar to Stephanie's books. The book has the same universe, the same idea of vampires sparkling and non-shirt-wearing werewolves, but a different storyline with different characters and setting. What do you call that type of book?
Honestly, I'm not a fan of Twilight, just using it as an example for this question. Sheesh.
Just from those who would say it's plaigarism, I know there are published works that spin off of star wars, or star trek, and other big stuff of movies, although they are not of the same author. However, these authors might get permission from the actual writers or owners to publish the work under their name or something, wouls that be called fanfiction, a spin-off, or something else.
