What do std, xr, xrs, natl, gs, se, etc. mean when discussing cars?

For example, when in the comparison chart for consumerguide.com one of the options for a Toyota Matrix model is a "5dr Wgn STD Manual (GS)" (I'm guessing this is a five door manual wagon, it would be nice to know the rest).
