what do portfolio reviewers look for in terms of an 8th-grader's artwork?

If anyone can tell me what type of artwork is being looked for (still life, portraiture, mixed media, etc.) and how talent or ability is determined, that would be awesome. The 8th grader in question prefers drawing- should he be encouraged to branch out for the sake of the portfolio?
