What do music players on Android use to find song data?

...Because it certainly can't be ID3 tags, that's for sure. I'm gonna copy-pasta something I posted on another forum, because I've ranted about this in too many places right about now:

So, for the tl;dr crowd: I wanted to get album art on my phone, didn't want to plunk down money and didn't think to download MixZing (in retrospect, the latter was a stupid move). Downloaded something to tinker with the ID3 tags. Everything but my phone says everything's in working order (even used the music player on my DSi... who said that part was worthless?). So, why does my Droid's music player (and now, even MixZing), not recognize the tags I have on my phone? Should I backup my apps and stuff with Astro and do a factory reset? Because I've tried everything I could think of. And if I, in fact, do a backup, that's not going to affect any paid apps I have on there, is it?

[edit:] I guess I should note all the songs I've had problems with are in m4a format...

I wish I knew. I constantly try to edit some of my songs genres and it will change on my PC but, in mixzing it still shows up wrong while others changed...

Glad I'm not the only one to have trouble editing tags. Although I fixed the whole "Unknown Artist" kerfuffle I was having thanks to a redundant back-up that I kept, it left me with a few songs with artists labeled "Unknown Artist", I went to fix them in foobar2000 and it only fixed one of them. It's really quite puzzling...
