I'm a newbie. I want recommendations on what I should buy, where I should go, what I should bring, and anything else extra you may want to share. I'm not trying to buy really expensive, top-of-the-line items, but I'm not saying that I'm cheap. I live in Maryland, and I'm going to start hiking with a friend or two. We're all 18, so we want something that's a little challenging (or with different trails with various difficulties), if you have any locations to suggest. Another main priority that I want information on, is shoes! I don't want boots, so what's an alternative? Any replies would be greatly appreciated!

Geeze... you sound like my wife. First thing you need to do is to drop the fear that the fashion police will give you a citation for not wearing stylish foot-gear and actually buy real hiking boots that will protect your feet and ankles while walking on uneven surfaces. The first time you twist an ankle when you're miles from help will erase the fear of a fashion police ticket.

Buy sensible foot-gear, a good day pack and water container(s), and carry something to eat. People can get hypothermia even in fair weather if a storm comes up, so know the possible weather conditions, let someone know where you're going and when you're due back. At least carry a light pancho in case of bad weather (it can also double as a shelter in case of emergency). If you get lost easily, then I suggest that you get a GPS that stores your path so that you can safely get back to your starting point. In my years of hiking / backpacking I've actually saved peoples lives that wandered off the beaten path and got lost. Be careful and as you hike, turn around and memorize where you came from so that when returning at least you'll have an idea of the terrain loks like from that direction, that way you will get back safely.
