What do I need to do to apply for a piercing apprenticeship?

I'm in an unusually lucky position where a good friend of mine is working at a tattoo shop and the main piercer at the shop has been fired. He recommended me for a piercing apprenticeship since they don't have anyone else in mind, but I've never apprenticed before. What do I need to do before I apply? I know you need to test for Blood Borne Pathogens (is that correct?) but I'm not sure how to go about it. Is it a certification or is it like being tested for diseases? What else might I have to test for? Any suggestions for a beginner? I'm 21 years old and have always been interested in the field.
 
My friend does piercings in a shop and she said all she did was show up with a resume and they taught her everything else like how to do all the piercings and sterilization.
