What do I need to do throughout my years in school to be qualified to be a news...

...anchor on tv? ***YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ ALL OF THIS... but it would probably help your answer... and i most definitly will award a best answer!*** :) thanks!

I am in high school and all my friends already have everything planned out for them. It really worries me to see how set they are about their futures and how unprepared i feel. I am VERY early in my high school career so I dont have that much to wory about... however lately I have been thinking a great deal about what I would posibly enjoy doing as a future career. I love theatre and performing so my first love would of course to be on broadway or in movies, however that is a very risky business and as a more stable choice i would love to get into journalism of some form particularly a news anchor on a major news station (of course i know i would have to work up to that). However i do not know what i need to do as far as college and majors and degrees go to achieve any of this. HELP?
 
if you want to be an actor/ess then do the school plays. take all video classes ie photo, video tech ... if your school has a channel where they video the sports you can sign up to anchor that also you could sign up for morning announcements if your school does that. hope i helped. you should definitly find what you wanna do and stick with it. but you are probably a freshman so you have a little while.
 
talk to a guidance counselor. that is the number one thing and they can help you decide where to go from there. they will help you decide a major and a college and tuition.

My only thought here is to tell you to talk to your guidance counselor. He/she will be able to steer you in the right direction. Or even your teacher or Principle. Good job thinking of your future, more kids need to do that. without a dream, we perish.
 
As far as degrees the most direct would be "Broadcast Media", also sometimes called "Broadcast Electronic Communication Arts", or even simply "Radio and Television."

NYU, San Diego State, UCLA and San Francisco State all have great programs. I attended San Francisco State's BECA program and have benefited greatly from it.

As far as what classes to take, you need a broad spectrum of skills in order to be a News Anchor. Try taking classes in speech, civics, political science, acting, improvisation, journalism, radio production, video production, video editing and most importantly writing.

Chances are you'll be a beat reporter for a small station before you're ever an anchor for a large one. These days, that means setting up your own camera, writing your own material, and even editing you own video.

A class in radio production can be helpful because it will help to perfect your vocal delivery, which is a hugely overlooked area.

Finally keep yourself in peak shape. These days reporters and anchors are chosen for looks as much as anything else. Its unfortunate, but true.
