What do I do, it still won't let me sign in to chat or change my status.?

Work offline was not checked yet it still shows me as offline in my chat status. Deleting yahoo won't mess up my account or my family's yahoo accounts? How do I delete it and reinstall it anyway? Will I still have my contacts if I delete it?
