What did we know before the Hubble Ultra Deep field photo?

What Im trying to ask is, did we already KNOW that there were 19823641723469173246917346917834's of galixes in this universe?
 
Even after the Hubble Ultra Deep Field Imaging we still do not know how many galaxies there are in the universe. 100-billion has been a common estimate for quite some time.

Also, don't forget that we're talking strictly about the *observable* universe. Because of the limitations placed by the speed of light and the fact that the farther away some celestial object is the faster it recedes from us, there's an immense region of the universe beyond 13.7-billion light years from us that we'll never be able to examine.
 
We thought that there were thousands of galaxies, not many millions. That picture definitely upended a lot of ideas about the universe.
 
We already knew there was a prodigious number of galaxies. The Hubble Deep Field just illustrates the fact particularly dramatically.
