What did the social reformers do to help out the working class poor?

The building of settlement houses, the settlement house movement was started in the USA by Jane Addams, and by 1900 there were nearly 100 settlement houses in the USA.Labour organisers campaigned for better working conditions, better wages, and an end to child labor. The remarkable Mother Jones was one of the major labor organisers of the early 20th century. The temperence movement was intended to improve the life of the poor, since temperence crusaders believed that all the evils poor people endured were brought about by drink. They thought prohibtion would put an end to all the ills of poverty.
