What did my fish die from?

I bought my son two comet goldfish maybe two weeks ago. The smaller of the two died sometime last night. A portion of his side had turned an orange/yellow-ish color, right around his fin. Everything seamed fine with them last night and the larger one doesn't seem to be having any problems. Just wondering if I should look into treating the water for something.

Main reason why,

1. The fish was not acclimated properly. Please make sure to follow the very important acclimation process which takes 30min to 1hour before introducing it to your tanks water as it has different PH level and temperature which makes your fish stressed and shock if you directly put them in your tank. In this case the fish might be already suffering from stressed thats why it did not last long.

several reasons :

tanks size might be small
overfeeding
too much movement from the outside of the tank.
no aeration or filter

if these reasons are not matching the case then might have been the the fish that was bought was already sick.

A test kit to test ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH is necessary for every aquarium. You may not know, goldfish require LARGE tanks. They can grow to be very large depending on the type you have. You should also be doing weekly water changes of 20%-40% and have the tank filtered very well as goldfish are very messy.
