What did i see when i was fishing?

I went with my dad fishing one day, it was night, and i saw something swimming along in the water, it was swimming snakelike, but it was longer and thicker than a snake, but i know it wasn't a sea snake and i know what i saw and it was way bigger than a snake please explain..
It wasn't an eel it didn't seem like an ordinary fish it seem weird
 
Well, were you freshwater fishing or ocean fishing?

Could have been a lamprey. Could have been an eel. Both live are freshwater and marine.
