What did early civilizations think of the Apocalypse?

In general, what did early civilizations (aztecs, indians, Egyptians...etc.) think about it?

Ex. Moon Myths:

The moon, in ancient civilizations, inspired both good and evil associations. Even though the moon was almost always predictable, cultures wondered: why did the moon do what it did, and why did it look the way it did? People in those early times did not understand why lunar eclipses occurred, could not scientifically explain the phases of the moon, and could not resolve the question of why the two celestial bodies were never seen together. They couldn't help but notice that the moon often seemed to have a face.
