What criteria do you use to determine whether someone is a great rapper?

You can't really use sales because Soulja Boy is extremely commercially successful, while rappers like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, & Rakim aren't. Yet people would say Rakim is a better rapper than Soulja even though Soulja sells more

2nd question: Who do you think is the greatest MC in the history of rap

I've heard things like beats, delivery, subject matter, popularity etc

For the thing that describes a great Emcee is about all around skill on the mic. No personal life. No drama. No hype. No media. Just an Emcee and the skill on his mic. This includes everything from flow, delivery, wordplay, lyrical content, syllable pattern, rhythmic consistency, rhyme schemes, as well as overall adaptability to any beat, etc.

BQ: Rakim hands down. There is a reason they call him THE GOD EMCEE. If you were to name any rapper today their flow could be traced back to Rakim. He gave Eminem his flow. He gave Tupac his flow. He gave Biggie his flow.
