What courses in high school do I need to take if I want to become an engineer?

What science and math courses are important for me to take if I plan to become an engineer and am aiming to get accepted to a top-tier engineering school (Stanford, MIT, UC Berkely, etc)? Any input and especially personal experience would be extremely helpful.
