What could cause an extreme boost in confidence?

Someone I know use to be a wuss throughout their life and let people take advantage of them.

Now they are saying everyone else is a tool and the world revolves around himself. They are very confident and walk around with their head up.

What could cause such a drastic change like this overnight?
