What could be wrong with the transmission in a 1996 Dodge Intrepid?

Car is no longer shifting into overdrive and is having trouble shifting back down into first. Problem started as an occasional stall, has only in the past two days devolved into a full-on transmission issue. What could be wrong?
172,000 miles. Recent tuneup. Just added transmission fluid.
