What constitutes a win?

How come americans say they didnt lose the war of 1812 because they werent annexed by the British? If thats the case then the US has never won a war because you've never tooken over another country either. You dont need to annex them to beat them
 
Winning is pretty subjective.
In the case of 1812, the United States goal was not to be annexed. Therefore, they won because they weren't.
None of the World Wars was fought to conquer land, atleast from the US's point of view. They were wars fought to neutralize a hostile enemy, which they were able to do.
 
The only person who ever wins is Chuck Norris. That's what always has and always will constitute a win.
