I remember reading a long time ago that there are common factors anthropologically in each civilization that tend to come up when they get complacent or are becoming overshadowed by another competing civilization. I remember one of them being the high social status received by beauty becomes unhealthy. Does anyone remember anymore or when I can find a source of this?

About a century ago, Spengler, who thought that civilizations naturally "aged and died" pereceived certain symptoms of a civilization in its "autumn" or twilight. Among these were a cessation of creative activity. Caesarism was another, as were wars and the rise of cities. Evidently the latter were sources of decadence.

Diamond, whose work focuses on how and why civilizations rise and fall, evaluates a society’s performance by five factors: environmental, governmental, resource use, friends and enemies.
