pretty drastic colors can make rooms look bigger. like darker walls with light trim. try a warm brown with a lighter beige trim. hang a large mirror on the wall to give the room a larger feel.
don't overwhelm it with huge clunky furniture either. keep the furniture simple. if the ceilings are tall, go up with the furniture, don't go out. Without seeing the room, that's the best I could tell you.
