What causes a 2001 Mercury Sable horn to honk by itself?

My mom's car horn just started honking by itself this week. At first I thought maybe something had fallen against the control that she carries in her purse, but it has continued to do it several more times. In fact it did it 3 times in the middle of the night last night. She has never had any problems out of it before now. Is there something that I can do to fix it (besides throwing the car away - I just thought I'd throw that in before someone else did.....lol), or is that something that a mechanic needs to do.
 
short in steering wheel best to looking inot getting it fix something is rubbing which will short out more and might burn or start a fire then you be without
 
faulty switch at the horn button, faulty relay or an intermittent short
