What catalyst would cause a fully independent third party in US politics?

none of this tea party bullshit, but a completely separate 3rd party. seems like a lot of inter-party bickering occurring now with the debates. could this be enough to draw merabers from both sides into a moderate party?

im hoping this debt ceiling voting debacle would, but americans are too lazy watching american idol or vampires to actually care, but when we do it'll be too late.

;143143014']Since major parties have split before and one of them has died. It would take major reform of the whole system. Things like a cap on campaign spending that was ultra-low or publicly finance elections. I'd personally like to see the abolishment of the current system and a popular vote system implemented.

America had the Reform Party in 1992 and 1996, with Ross Perot running. The problem with third parties is that eventually their issues get co-opted by the other two major parties, and interest and support dwindle. It will probably always be like that. But that won't (and shouldn't) stop people from trying.

and nothing can be done about it, people just need to realize that.

people won't give a fuck until shit finally hits the fan.

until then, people will care about who got voted off big brother, when the next twilight move is coming out, what new product apple will be releasing, and which celebrity is on the news that week.

Problem with the reform party was Perot and Ventura had a pissing match over party leadership, then both walked away from it, and Buchanan put the final nail in it by hijacking their presidential ballot spot

Perot was polling at almost 40% in July in his first run too, then he quit and reentered the race which fucked him. He still got 19% of the popular vote. In a 3 man race, if he didn't fuck up stupidly like he did, there was a good chance he would have won it.

In descending order of likelihood:
nuclear detonation
alien visitation
zorabie apocalypse
Proper invasion by China
Proper invasion by Mexico et al
Coordinated uprising of constitution defenders

well look into history and see when party systems evolved and changed. When major country altering events happen and there is a big conflict between the people and the current parties, a new party comes up that challenges the old.
