My sister lives within walking distance of the JR hospital, quite a nice area (Marston), the schools are mixed - some are good (you get an idea from ofsted.gov.uk). Headington is a nice area - it has a very good fee paying school.
It's fairly inner city, so not crime free. Areas to avoid are in or close to the Lees estate. You have to visit the area and you will get a feel for the good and bad. Also, rent and house prices will be cheaper in the less desirable areas, like anywhere else.
