What can I use as a photography backdrop?

I'm planning a photoshoot with a local ballet group at a dance studio. I have a picture in my head of what I want the photos to look like and it involves a solid black background.

I want to get the backdrop but I don't want to buy the $40 muslin stuff.
I'm talking like 6x9 black fabric for under like $10.
Do you know where I could find it or find that much fabric for cheap?

And also, should I use fabric for the ground as well? And if not, what cheap black material should I use for the ground since they're dancers and whatnot.

I'm pretty much just trying to find something big, black, and cheap.
Help!

If you want to do professional photos that will make them want to come back to you for pictures later on, use something big and black, as you stated, but DON'T go cheap. You can buy a large roll of paper at your local photo store, but keep in mind that any poses which could cause the dancers to fall could in turn cause the paper to rip, but if it isn't major and you are a photoshop pro you can fix it easily. Also, get something that is long enough for both the back and the floor.

Photographers use Muslin because the fabric is thin and the flash bounces off of it in a way that it is almost a diffuser, so you don't have to worry about a harsh flashy look with your photos. You are much better off picking something that would work in the long run, last longer, and be a better choice overall.

I strongly recommend Muslin, or paper.
