What can i do to upgrade my 1997 Honda Civic EX?

Ok, i just bought a 97 civic as commuter car to go back and fourth to work, but i also have a thing for speed and a nice look. Does anyone has suggestions on performance upgrades? if so can you give me a list and name of product. also im used to driving my large V-8 so id like to know what kind of cars i can expect to outrun in this 1.6 haha thank you
